Figure 1.0 - Island Heritage - Life by the Sea

Rational

In this painting (Fig1.0) I did an acrylic with watercolor technique traditional Maldivian landscape, with two figures wearing a Libas (which is one of the traditional outfits of the Maldives). In this painting it showcases a traditional style boat lodged on to the beach and a day to day life activity of the olden days of Maldives with  one of the ladies going to wash the cooking pot to the sea shore and the other sitting by the beach and weaving palm leaves (which is used to make mats, roofs for the hut houses and barricade walls of the houses in the olden days). The composition shows balance and harmony from one element to the other.

3. Reflection

In this module, I learned about design elements such as line, shape, color, texture, and space, as well as design principles which are balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, unity and etc... Understanding these concepts gave me a stronger foundation in visual composition and how to analyze artworks effectively. One of the skills I learnt was conducting a visual analysis, which I applied to Henri Edmond Cross’s Two Women by the Shore, Mediterranean, from this task I learnt how design principles influence perception of paintings.

What I enjoyed most in this module was the learning to engage with artworks on a deeper level. Analyzing Two Women by the Shore, Mediterranean helped me appreciate the use of color in art as well as the balance and harmony of artworks. I also enjoyed experimenting with creating my own sketches which was inspired by the chosen artwork of Task 01. The final painting that I did was very different from the initial idea I chose in Task 02, and I am very happy with the out come of it.

I found some challenging parts during this module, which was the technical analysis of certain principles, as well as developing the chosen idea. Through this module, I learned that I like the balance in paintings and emphasis on certain elements to improve an artwork.

I aspire to apply what I learnt in this module in my own design projects in the coming semesters and further work, refining my style and improve more on my ability to communicate visually in my designs.
