 WEEK 9

Sewing the tailored skirt on calico has been a rewarding experience, despite the challenges. The process deepened my understanding of garment construction and highlighted areas for improvement.

This week marked a significant step in my sewing journey as I transitioned from tailored skirts to drafting and sewing a basic shirt. Building on the pattern drafting skills honed in previous weeks, this project presented a new set of challenges.

The groundwork for this week’s project was laid during the previous week when I drafted the basic shirt pattern. The process involved careful measurements of each piece, from the bodice to the sleeves and collar. With the pattern ready, I moved on to cutting the calico fabric, mindful of avoiding errors from prior projects.

One near-mistake reminded me how crucial it is to double-check every step. I almost repeated my skirt mishap by adding a seam allowance to a cut-on-fold piece. Fortunately, I caught the error before cutting the fabric, saving myself from a potentially time-consuming adjustment.

As a first-time shirt maker, attaching the sleeves proved to be a tricky task. Setting in the sleeves required precision to avoid puckering and achieve a smooth finish. After several attempts, I managed to get them attached correctly, but not without some frustration.

The collar posed another challenge. Aligning the collar with the neckline and ensuring a neat finish took patience and care. This step taught me the importance of following instructions meticulously and taking my time to achieve a polished result.

Adding to the difficulty, I forgot to document much of my progress for the blog. While this oversight was frustrating, it highlighted the need to maintain a balance between focusing on the task and recording the process for reflection and improvement.

Looking back, this week reinforced the value of preparation, attention to detail, and resilience. Catching the seam allowance error before cutting was a small victory that showed I’m learning from past mistakes. While attaching the sleeves and collar tested my patience, overcoming these hurdles boosted my confidence in tackling complex garments.

Forgetting to record my progress was a reminder of the importance of documentation in the creative process. Moving forward, I plan to set reminders or allocate specific times to capture my work.
